Inspiring Young People:

Our Vision for Trafford Academy

Trafford Academy* will provide local pupils with exciting educational opportunities in new state-of-the-art buildings and will transform the landscape of secondary education in the North of the Borough, providing 1050 places for students aged 11-16.

The Academy will open on the sites of the two existing schools, Lostock College and Stretford High School, in September 2010. Significant investment is being made in the construction of the new Academy building, which will open in 2013 on the Stretford High School site. This will include exciting new resources, purpose-built learning spaces and outstanding facilities supporting all areas of the curriculum.

We want the Academy to be a resource for the whole community, providing students, residents and other schools with access to first class facilities during and outside of school hours. We are committed to delivering improved opportunities for everyone engaged with the Academy and this theme will inform every decision we make along the way.

We want the Academy to foster a real spirit of aspiration and achievement in all our pupils, to enable them to reach their potential and to equip them with the skills necessary to lead a valuable and fulfilling life. The Academy will be a welcoming and inclusive environment that will give pupils of all abilities the opportunity to be the very best that they can be. We will achieve this by delivering both high academic standards, and a wide range of vocational and skills led options. This will enable pupils to enjoy a truly personalised programme of learning that will equip them for further education or employment.

The Academy will also put a strong emphasis on physical wellbeing and good health, and we will be working closely with our partners and neighbours, Manchester United Foundation and Lancashire County Cricket Club, to access their expertise and world-class facilities.

Sitting as we do in the heart of a culturally rich community, we are also committed to encouraging our pupils to understand and appreciate their wider role in society, encouraging them to embrace teamwork, empathy, collaboration and a personal and collective ambition to achieve. Our plans include a new focus on Science and Applied Sciences as the Academy’s specialism, which we believe will bring an energy and vitality to Academy life, and also allow the equal participation of both schools.

The Academy will work closely with its key partners and employers to develop an exciting and challenging curriculum that demonstrates the importance and relevance of science to real life, and builds a range of academic, vocational and work based skills. Trafford College’s vision for the Academy centres around the delivery of world-class learning, better skills and improving the employability of young people. The College will work closely with the Academy to support effective transition into post-16 learning, helping students to achieve their individual goals and dreams.
